ONCE UPON A TIME

ONCE UPON A TIME

It is the Earth Goddess for all to see” – that’s what Silbury Hill is according to the narrator on the DVD, “Goddess Remembered.”  It is “the tallest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe and one of the world's largest,” according to the Stone Pages site on antiquities.  It looks like a gigantic pile of dirt.  It is more than four thousand years old.

I couldn’t recall Silbury Hill.  I looked it up in my book, Voyages of the Pyramid Builders; The True Origins of the Pyramids from Lost Egypt to Ancient America, by Robert M. Schoch, Ph.D. with Robert Aquinas McNally.  The book says, “Whiteness is a key characteristic of another pyramid candidate:  Silbury Hill, which is located just south of the village of Avebury in England’s Wiltshire.  A massive artificial mound with a flat top, Silbury Hill stands approximately 130 feet high, with a base circumference of 1,640 feet that covers more than five acres.  The hill contains over 12 million cubic feet of earth and chalk, the latter originally coloring it white.  This monument was built in three stages, the first beginning in about 2660 BC.  Various legends and stories attach to Silbury Hill, but the monument’s purpose remains unknown.

If Silbury Hill is a mound of the Great Goddess, does it signify her breast or her womb?  The DVD would seem to favor the idea of a breast because it launches into some sort of paean to her breast.  However, a BBC article says “Earth worshippers believe that Silbury is, in fact, the swollen womb of the Earth Goddess and provides a symbol linking the harvest with the pregnant earth.”

Silbury Hill is flat on top, but that flat area is atop some sort of round crown, a circle within the much larger circle of the base circumference.  And the round crown – is it a nipple or just some erosion?  This tourism page says, “Each of the six steps was concealed within the overall profile of the mound, except the last one at the top which was left as a terrace or ledge about 17 feet (5 m.) below the summit. This terrace is clearly visible on the eastern side of the mound, but less distinct from the west.  Yes, it is clearly visible and apparently intended – so the breast idea seems plausible.  I’ll add here what the UK’s English Heritage says about Silbury Hill, “Its purpose and significance remain enigmatic,” just so you know what the official position is.

According to the DVD, people dug into Silbury Hill in order to search for ancient treasure, but apparently, there was no treasure (at least no known report of it).  The top of Silbury Hill collapsed in 2000 and this was a delayed result of destructive excavations in 1776.  And other excavations at Silbury Hill have caused similar problems.  (What barbarians would dig destructive tunnels into an ancient artifact!!!  What a shame!!!)  And now as part of an effort to analyze and remedy the problem tunnels, “investigators” have drilled seven boreholes deep into the mound.  No doubt adding to the destruction.

The DVD shows Silbury Hill covered by sheep.  The hill is brown compared to the surrounding countryside and I had to ask myself if the brownness is grass or some other plant that is seasonally brown, or if the hill is nearly denuded by the sheep (that tend to nibble down to the roots and kill the grass).  Without sufficient grass, this ancient monument will just wash away in the rain.  The photo in the book shows erosion gullies cascading down the sides of the mound.  (Maybe something has already been done to protect the mound from the sheep by now?  We can only hope so.  And perhaps the sheep are allowed there only briefly to provide some sort of ecological “mowing” function to keep tree saplings from taking over?)  Seems to me their sharp little hooves could dislodge bits of surface material.

An aerial view of a different pre-historic site in the DVD astonished me.  Some bureaucrat had put a paved road right across the Stonehenge site.  The circle of prehistoric stones there is just a small circle inside a much larger circle, which has a road across it.  Is nothing sacred?  Didn’t building the road disturb the archeological record?  I can’t imagine how a road could be built there without disturbing at least the top layers.  I was just aghast to see that road!  In their hubris they thought no doubt that they could find and knowledgeably analyze everything there was to find of any archeological significance before they sent in the bulldozers.  What a shame!!!  And the road had no purpose other than to get the tourists within closer walking distance of the stones.

There is also a major highway that misses the Stonehenge outer circle by mere meters – what artifacts were lost putting in that highway?  Not much thought went into that either!

There’s a major highway going right past Silbury Hill, too.  Not much thought went into that either!

I wonder what motivated the ancient people to keep on building Silbury Hill generation after generation for 400 years.  What was its purpose?  Did they climb it to make harvest offerings to fruitful Earth at the top of the hill?  Did they dance on it to celebrate the rising of the full moon?  Did they sing hymns to the nourishing Great Mother?  Sounds like more fun than sitting in front of a screen clicking on a mouse.

Sometimes a circle is just a circle.

Full-size image

It is interesting that the Silbury and Stonehenge design of a circle within a much larger circle is also found in the huge “rose windows” of many Christian cathedrals; for example, the beautiful rose window at the Cathedral of Notre Dame (for many more, search Google images for “rose window”).  Could it be we remember her still in a way, even after centuries of having spiritual traditions subverted to fit a male mold?

And sometimes a circle is an octagon???  According to the UK’s English Heritage, their recent survey using satellite mapping suggests . . . that the mound is not in fact truly circular: on the summit it appears to be more angular than circular, while at the base it is almost octagonal in form.”  That page also says that the steps may in fact be a spiraling ledge.  I went back and viewed the DVD again to see if the periphery looks octagonal.  Nope.  The aerial view in the DVD shows nearly the whole circumference.  Sure looks like it was intended to be a circle to me as the whole mound is rounded except for the top and crown.  I couldn’t find the particulars on their “suggestion of an octagon,” but I expect the edge is wobbly after 4,000 years of weathering and that’s all it is.

Of course there’s no way to prove (yet) what the Goddess Remembered DVD implies, that Silbury and Stonehenge were used for worship, let alone a particular kind of worship, but it’s a good bet, because worship of the Goddess was prevalent at that time.

Our legacy will not be an enigmatic pile of dirt, or the temples, art, and statues of the ancient Goddess worshippers.  Rather it will be gigantic piles of rusting containers oozing radioactive waste and hazardous chemicals, thousands of landfills overflowing with garbage, it will be a gazillion tons of crumbling asphalt and concrete, it will be a toxified and desertified landscape, polluted air and water, biological warfare germs, etc., the legacy of ripping-off the Earth.  We’d do better to get re-acquainted with our connection to the Earth.  A consumerist, hierarchical way of life is not the only way – there are alternatives that revere the Earth.  We hope.

Sailboats are cool.

I had a ten foot styrofoam [high-quality] one, and I almost went over the Nimbus dam in California..and with my girl friend freaking out and an armada of lake boats afraid to get close enough to help us..and hanging over the edge, 350 feet down to the rocks.

At the bottom, the fishermen on the rocks were all pointing up and I thought rapidly as I threw stuff over off of the stretched cable we were hung up on...so wow indeed.

And the tornado that had layed every sailboat out flat passed, and the calm of the center was quiet..scary as things just "drifted upwards" very slowly..the air was lighter too as in density.

Then the wind hit and it reversed 180 degrees.

I flipped the boat up with not-before strength and the wind caught the sail and the boom rope slid by as it whipped forward and I caught it like a snake..."Whooomp!!" It catches and yanks us back up over the edge, and with us laying in the water off the tail we sailed straight away into those cheering boats...what a deal!

I will never sail on anything but flat water with no edges again..and..the girl is now a doctor by the way in social work..she converted right there and there she went..without me.

Oh well is the story now of course.

And "soooo peaceful" to sail in the gentle breezes....DW.

The mounds and temples in the Americas are marvelous ruins. Perhaps some of these constructions are built on pre-flood foundations.

Hi Truly:
It was so nice to open my space this morning and see a comment from you.  I haven't seen you for ages!!
This is fascinating stuff you have here.  It's a whole different way of looking at what I believe in.  And it dates back 4,000 years....just goes to show how long people have actually believed in "a Goddess".  How sad that uncaring excavators caused the destruction that they did.
What you said about having spiritual traditions subverted to fit a "male mold" is exactly what I believed happened.  The fragile male ego couldn't stand the tought of worshipping a "female figure"; so that how the "burning times" came about.  All that worshipped "Her" were branded a "Witch" and murdered.  And murder is exactly what it was....it certainly wasn't any sort of justice, that's for sure!!
Your reference to everything being in a "circle" fits also.  All rituals and ceremonies start with "The Circle".  It all fits.  Thanks for bringing my attention t this and making sure that I came over to see it.  It's very interesting.
Hugs,
Diane

The mound outside of my Alabama hometown was elongated in shape (and covered with trees).  It most likely had some religious purpose as it appeared to be aligned with the sun at equinox.  We camped on top of it often and it’s likely a good thing we didn’t think anything worthwhile was buried there.  My goodness, how times have changed.

A few miles from my current home, there is a mound site beside the Arkansas river; however, only about half of the mounds are still standing.  The others were leveled by early settlers search for whatever.

While there may have been religious or mystical reason these mounds were built, my little engineering brain suggests that the mounds might have offered "high ground" during seasonal floods.  As for the Silbury Hill, I’m sure someone had an idea, formulated a plan and got others to buy into the project.  I just wonder if a hundred years later, one of the workers ever dropped his (or her) basket and asked, “Now, will someone explain what we’re really trying to accomplish here with this big pile of dirt?”  There was confusion at The Tower of Babel project site and I suspect the same may have happened at Silbury Hill.

I thoroughly enjoyed this post.  How I wish the sacred things could be left untouched, left for those who understand the meaning of sacred.  It surely breaks my heart to know how both of these places could be so desecrated trying to "find the meaning" rather than left alone for those who would enjoy the wonder and mystery of their meaning.

It was a pleasure to enjoy your visit.  I don't get around enough, but I'm hoping to change that once I have enough saved for a new laptop.  My computer at home tends to freeze with some sites, therefore some of my visiting is limited to my work hours.  I'm still at a loss to wonder how you "lost" me when you were still in my friends list on my site.  A mystery that will never be solved I'm afraid.  Just as some mysteries should never be solved.  Have a wonderful day!

A couple thought on Sibury...all chalk?

What then? They mined it from elsewhere specifically to take there and dump?

It would have to have been a community-wide project for sure.

But at that time, I'd think that all efforts to build "straight up" was as powerful of an internal urge as it is now, and today's highest buildings even curve outward, and a spinning skyscraper in Asia is approved and under construction.

So all structures then would have to be sloping inward regardless of shape, assuming the walls are unbraced with superstructure or stone masonry supports.

Being a round structure and dirt, it would either all be one completed effort per layer, or purposeful indentations making it appear like layers but isn't.

In all cases, they, and current building expertise could only build a mound or pyramid, but I say "trying to build a vertical tower"...as in Babbel's proverbial tower.

Underlying would be a desire internally to fly..drift through the air and go to any spot in the sky one could see like the birds do in fact.

If we can see it, we want to touch it, taste it, smell it and see what it feels like.

If we can imagine it even, we have to produce for at least sight...therfor the super-collider is officially fired up and gaining speed.

About three months though until it reaches top speed for the collision...February?

And will the black hole they intend to cause go away as they suggest?

Just think...we'll see a real one, and if only for a second...is it worth the look-see?

It is no more than the mounds and pyramids and skycscraper attempts to me...blamed on some god while they're at it too.

I only hope the did the "get naked" dancing things rather than virgin sacrifices is all..poor things.

So where exactly does or "did" the chalk come from?

The same place or many places?

Were they clearing land of infertile chalk and had established that site as a city dump?

A chalk dump in fact?

A geochemist can tell you for sure, and to the ten feet of the origin for each sample.

Draw lines from the deposited sample to the origin spot of each cubic foot, and it would show clear traffic patterns.

If you started with the top layer from the center out you'd have the deposit chronology correctly down.

It would make an interesting pattern of some use for thoughts against "enigmatic" at least for sure...

But hey, at the last handful of chalk, you would have analyzed and located and drew your last line and know the story.

You'd know everything, but your artifact would be gone...?

So which is more valuable?

To know, or to have without knowledge or name?

And hierachical? What else can be so here?

And consumerism?

I'm up for more of that. I need a million right away for my world-saving machines for instance and ain't getting it.

What kind of a world is this then for my question.

One that won't make it for lack of a few million?

Dire views from a position of luxury are strange thoughts indeed I have thought, and so I write about electricity-production recently.

I'll have a prototype up someday soon for display as I'm getting cheaper and cheaper for my models.

But someday, we will mine our toxic slews and radioactive dumps like they were gold dust for their contained value we'll have found better uses for I'm sure.

I mean..."free radioactive material?"....And more penicillin in my sewer than in hospital inventories to be recoverd?

I want the mining contract...All for myself.

Very good posting. In the closing paragraph you mentioned the piles of containers as they will all eventually give way. Also an issue which is largely ignored by the mainstream media; and also taught to both children and adults.

As an example. People in general are basically being spoonfed that a possible green alternate might be something such as "going back" to a more advanced version of nuclear power. To this day there are still more than a few major problems with that; both in the past and even as it exists now- for quite some time into the future.

Very few people seem to remember the place- Three Mile Island; somewhat near Harrisburg in Pennsylvania. A very major disaster was narrowly averted which would have caused garve injury to literally millions of people. Or, how about the incident which happened in the former Soviet Union? The exact figures of how many were really killed is somewhat of a grey area. The town of some formerly sixty thousand people remains completely abandoned while the occasional scientific team studies it. Most of the region will not be fit for human habitation for well over ten thousand years- not a typo.

How about the spent fuel rods and all of the contamanated items from such plants- which are being burried remarkeably close to major water supplies?

Well enough about nuclear power. A smaller but also quite dangerous version can also be found through a rather large amount of housholds. Ever see those so called "twisted spiral light bulbs"? Take a closer look at the packaging. Almost all of them contain mercury. So please excercise extreme caution in not breaking one.

Wondering how many of them will ever make it to proper disposal.

A green planet certainly is worthy of a goal. Yet in fact it might indeed be well beyond the tipping point and will actually take generations to reverse all of the ignorance.

My own family [and myself included] have hidden a "boat builders" culture's site per Dr. D.E. Tyler [Amazon.com for his books] who says is up to eight million years old.

We have been picking up and saving the pieces that wash out of the top of the soil in this "quarry site" just down the canyon from his site..but "excellant examples" is all he would commit to when he saw my samples from the source site.

He said the collective forces against his study results was devastating for him his whole life, and he was about 75 when I met him from tracing him down to his sister's house where he hid out at and went to visit a time or two on the way by from working my own site...dead by now possibly.

So, "zero amount of  ritual" are the reasons for those collection points in that "Nova discussed" culture, and even there, Alan Alda says "3 to 5 million years old" for the piece in his hand in the last show in the series, and a scientist famous in the field [forgot who] says officially "2.5 to 3" million years old for the same piece.

They are wood working tools used to shape round trees into square lumber...tongue and groove, pins, etc can be made with them.

Sooo, "boat builders" even is misleading..."ship builders" of high order is more like it...finish carpentry tools in fact, and I have more than anybody on earth it's said...in my bedroom in boxes.

A treasure or what?....But relative to 4,000 years?

And furthermore, they are in distinct layers corresponding with world floods from astroid impacts exactly.

They were the only survivors of a destroyed humanity.

But very high tech and mathematics for each society is what is fully visible in their tools.

So they arrive at this high ground over in the Oregon Basin as they head uphill from rising waters.

When the water can't go any higher [4,000 feet elevation] as all the water that there is here, they are all there that survived, and they can find nothing but flint, obsidian, and dense lava to work with.

So they built net weights first, triangle-shaped things for anchors that won't slip out of the net tie-ins, and then ships that sail the high seas....and left.

A million or two years later?

Another flood, and more survivors make it there again since the platlet doesn't move there...a commonality of the places these identical sites exist that Scientific Frontier's [by Nova] discusses with Alda narrating them..five shows total, and then "nothing more" on it...my experiences went like that also I might add.

Are we afraid that our own "fabulous culture" is merely the last one? Most recent?

That our religions and symbols will pass away the same as their's did?

That our god is a fiction like their's is assumed to now be?

Is mankind truly interested only in his own belly button? Not the "whole story?" [no pun intended].

But no matter, another astroid is projected to hit us soon..and I'm not going to argue that either of course. One either knows or not on both issues.

Interest in "other humans that were en masse" is hard to find for those two at least in "obscure science" annals. "Intensely suppressed" is more like the term they should use if honesty was a goal..which it's not..period.

"We'll see" was the thought of each of those cultures that only left "indestructable tools" for a message on that.

I saw that there are no religious symbols, no jewelry, and mostly, "no weapons of any kind" for any of those guys.

Cooperation was "finally" the only issue I'd say for one thing, and along with Tyler and Robson Bonnechson as who is the opposition he faced.

RB became the Director of "The Early Man Project" in Oregon for all his affluent life by keeping his mouth shut, and his roommate and co-scientist goes to the press instead with his finding's and evidence..65 years ago in fact.

So Tyler can't get a job, a subscription to some magazines, or even a hearing for his whole life in his firm reply of "I will not lie for any amount or deal they can make me" in his words on it.

The one sitting on my computer makes me stablize somewhat when thinking about recent "gods and peoples" of the last few years as I think of the last few "five thousand years."

Perspective?

David.
